From Zero to a Top Eredivisie Portfolio: My Ultimate XI Journey

One of the biggest attractions of Ultimate XI is that success isn't only determined by your matchday scores. Building club value through smart investments is equally rewarding, especially if you're willing to think a few months ahead instead of focusing only on the next gameweek.

From the beginning, my strategy has been simple: identify players before everyone else realises their potential.

That often means buying players when they are still undervalued, whether that's because they're young talents, returning from injury, or simply haven't had their breakthrough season yet. If your research is right, the market usually catches up eventually.

One of my favourite examples is Ismael Saibari.

I bought Saibari for $27 million and eventually sold him for $49 million. While there have certainly been players with even bigger percentage gains, this remains my biggest realised profit so far. It perfectly illustrates how rewarding patience can be. Rather than trying to flip players every few weeks, I prefer holding quality assets until they reach what I believe is their fair market value.

Those profits can then be reinvested into the next generation of talents, creating a snowball effect that steadily increases your overall club value.

Although Saibari generated my biggest profit in absolute numbers, my best returns on investment came from two young players that perfectly represent the type of opportunities I love looking for.

The first is Ruud Nijstad.

I managed to buy him for just $198k, and today he's worth around $8.1 million. That's the kind of investment every Ultimate XI manager dreams of finding. At the time of buying, I was fully aware of his potential, but the market hadn't fully priced it in yet.

Another fantastic investment has been Martes.

I bought him for only $22k, and his current value sits around $4.7 million. These are exactly the kinds of players that make focusing on one league so enjoyable. If you closely follow academy football, pre-season matches and youth development, you'll often spot opportunities before the wider market does.

Not every youngster becomes a star, of course. Investing in youth always carries risk. Some players need longer to develop, some struggle with injuries and others simply don't make the step to senior football.

But when you consistently make informed decisions, the winners easily outweigh the misses.

If I had to summarise my investment philosophy in one sentence, it would be this:

Buy players before everyone else wants them.

That usually means investing in young players who haven't fully established themselves yet.

The introduction of the Academy squad makes this strategy even stronger.

Previously, buying too many young prospects meant sacrificing valuable first-team squad spots. Every speculative investment came with an opportunity cost, as those places could have been occupied by players contributing points every gameweek.

Now that's changed.

The Academy gives managers far more flexibility to invest in long-term prospects without hurting their competitive squad. You can stash talented youngsters while continuing to field your strongest possible line-up in competitions.

For managers who enjoy scouting future stars, this is probably one of the biggest improvements Ultimate XI has introduced.

It encourages long-term thinking instead of purely short-term trading, and rewards players who are willing to do their homework.

As someone who spends a lot of time following Eredivisie youth football, I absolutely love this addition.

While growing club value is a huge part of the game, it's definitely not the only reason I enjoy Ultimate XI.

One thing I never want to lose sight of is the competitive aspect.

I genuinely enjoy building the strongest possible Eredivisie team and competing for the highest rankings every matchday. Finding the right balance between promising talents and proven performers is one of the most satisfying parts of squad building.

In the past, rewards were largely focused on in-game currency, which naturally encouraged many managers to prioritise trading and portfolio growth.

Now that rewards are increasingly shifting towards real cash prizes, strong matchday performances have become even more important.

That change makes roster construction far more interesting.

Sometimes it's worth holding onto an expensive star because of the points they'll deliver every week, even if their value may not increase significantly anymore. Other times it's better to cash out and reinvest in the next emerging talent.

Finding that balance is, in my opinion, what makes Ultimate XI such an engaging game.

For me, the ideal squad combines both worlds: a core of reliable Eredivisie stars capable of delivering consistent fantasy scores, surrounded by carefully selected young talents that can significantly increase in value over time.

That's the strategy I've followed since joining in January, and it's the foundation that has helped me grow my club to where it is today.

Some players become overpriced after a strong season, while others remain surprisingly affordable despite being on the verge of a breakthrough. Identifying those players before the rest of the market catches on is one of the best ways to grow both your club value and your matchday potential.

If there's one lesson I've learned during my first months on Ultimate XI, it's that patience is incredibly valuable.

Not every investment pays off immediately.

Some players need several months before their opportunity arrives. Others may temporarily lose value before eventually becoming key players.

It can be tempting to sell whenever prices fluctuate, but I've found that trusting your own research usually produces the best long-term results.

My biggest successes, whether it was Saibari, Ruud Nijstad or Martes, didn't happen because I constantly traded in and out. They happened because I identified their potential early and gave those investments time to develop.

That's the approach I'll continue to follow going into the new season.
